Kidney failure in infants and children.

چکیده
Introduction The evaluation of kidney failure is challenging, despite many advances in diagnosis and treatment over the past decade. To provide pediatricians with an informed choice, this article reviews both acute and chronic renal failure, their multiple causes, the principles of treatment, and both shortand long-term outcomes. Acute renal failure (ARF) is characterized by the abrupt failure of the kidneys to regulate water and electrolyte homeostasis. ARFs in childhood due to hemolytic-uremic syndrome, postinfectious acute glomerulonephritis, or dehydration are reversible, but a small percentage may progress to chronic renal failure (CRF). CRF is the result of slowly progressive kidney diseases and seldom is fully reversible. This condition in childhood is associated with obstructive uropathy, congenital aplastic/hypoplastic/dysplastic kidneys, and other causes. In CRF, almost every system in the body eventually becomes compromised.

Prognostic Value of Soluble ST2 (sST2) Serum Levels in Infants and Children with Heart Failure Complicating Congenital Heart Disease
Background Heart failure (HF) in infants and children with congenital heart disease (CHD) is a crucial complication with different outcomes. Many biomarkers are used as prognostic indicators. Soluble ST2 (sST2) is one of these markers studied in adults with HF. We aimed to study the prognostic value of sST2 in CHD children with HF. Materials and Methods In current case-control study, thirty-six...
متن کاملPredictive Factors of Acute Renal Failure in the Neonates with Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Background: Preterm birth occurs in a large number of pregnancies, and its incidence has been reported to be on the rise. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in the premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The present study aimed to determine the predictive factors, clinical courses, and outcomes of AKI in the neonates with the clinical and radiological manifes...
متن کاملRenal replacement therapy in infants with chronic renal failure in the first year of life.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Although results of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in small children have improved during recent years, data about RRT in neonates are scarce. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS In a retrospective study, we analyzed the outcome of infants who had chronic kidney disease and started RRT within their first year of life. Between 1997 and 2008, all 29 infants ...
متن کاملAetiology and outcome of acute and chronic renal failure in infants.
BACKGROUND The aetiology and outcome of acute (ARF) and chronic renal failure (CRF) in infants were analysed in a retrospective study. METHODS Between January 1997 and April 2004 all children <1 year of age with a serum creatinine >100 mumol/l at Hannover Medical School were followed up for up to 6 years. One hundred and nineteen children with a serum creatinine >100 mumol/l were identified, ...
متن کاملKidney transplantation in infants and small children.
Transplantation is now the preferred treatment for children with end-stage kidney disease. But not all pediatric age groups have enjoyed the same success. The number of transplants in infants and young children has lagged behind the number in older children. One reason for this is the philosophy of some centers to maintain infants on dialysis until they reach some arbitrarily determined age, at...
متن کاملKIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION IN CHILDREN: RESULTS OF TEN YEARS EXP ERIENCE IN IMAM REZA HOSPITAL
Advances in nephrology and pediatric urology have increased the number of children who survive renal disease and become candidates for renal transplantation. Ten years of experience in pediatric renal transplantation are reviewed to determine the rates of patient morbidity and graft survival. Of the 450 renal transplantations performed in Imam Reza Hospital (1989- 1999), fifty-one were don...
